Ostarbeiter was a Death Industrial project of Olegh Kolyada (= the man behind Oda Relicta, First Human Ferro, In Meditarium), dating back to summer 1998. During 1999-2001 the band released several tapes & CDRs under different titles. The current 2CD edition is a collection of material recorded at the turn of the millennium. The industrialist document also includes four collaborations with Deutsch Nepal, Wertham, Isomer, and Streicher. Comes in a double DVD slimcase. 24 songs / 112 min. Limited to 300.

«Viva Old school! Viva Angry Young Man!». Таков девиз «Остарбайтера», проекта Олега Коляды, в рамках которого он создавал на рубеже десятилетий композиции свои индустриальные треки. Эта двухдисковая компиляция объединяет практически все, что было записано под этим названием – сюда вошел материал (как оригинальные, так и неиспользованные в итоге различные версии тех или иных треков) с кассеты «Metaballistik: Viewed under Infra-Red» 1999 года и CDR-альбом «Ferrari» 2001 года, а также самые первые записи Олега с кассеты «The Halo over Pontiffs Hearse» и специально созданные для этого релиза совместные композиции с отцами-основателями и поборниками чистоты жанра. Вместе с Олегом авторы «Deutsch Nepal», «Wertham», «Streicher» и «Isomer» уверенно демонстрируют, что «Man», может быть, уже и не «Young», но, безусловно, все также «Angry».
Остарбайтерами, как известно, во время Второй Мировой немцы называли вывозимых в Германию с Восточных оккупированных территорий людей, которых использовали на фабриках и заводах в качестве бесплатной рабочей силы. Известно также, что большее число остарбайтеров составили жители Украины. Музыка Коляды уверенно поддерживает скупые кадры исторической хроники и безжалостные колонки бесконечных цифр, за каждой из которых стоит чья-то судьба, обращаясь к конвейерным циклам грубого и механического шума, к металлическому лязгу, к гулкой и пугающе безжизненной атмосфере заводских цехов. На этом индустриальном предприятии происходит деконструкция исходных материалов в шумовые нагромождения и наваливающиеся своей тяжестью стены тоталитарного звука, сквозь которые доносятся искаженные, пропущенные через фильтры и эффекты голоса, обладатели которых порой относятся к разным этническим, культурным и временным группам – кто-то под лязг затворов обещает бороться до последней пули, по законам военного времени с анархистами и паникерами, а кто-то ведет скупой на эмоции допрос маньяка, пытаясь выяснить, испытывал ли тот жалость и раскаяние, хотя «нет» уже хорошо слышится в спокойных интонациях убийцы. «The Iron Era» демонстрирует умение Коляды сочинять «настоящий» death industrial с присущей ему радикальностью и некоторой прямолинейностью, дополненной здесь призрачными атмосферами темного эмбиента и регулярно пробиваемый шумовой дробью и шершавым ритмом «силовой электроники». Иногда агрессия не скрывается, иногда, напротив, таиться по скрытым тьмой закоулкам, иногда напряжение, аккумулированное военными трагедиями прошлого века, оставляет свои следы в виде эха бравурных гимнов и маршевой поступи пехоты, а иногда проскакивает горечь той самой победы, которая не приносит счастья никому, оставаясь позади потерявших всякую связь с мирной реальностью людей огнями пожарищ и ужасами погромов. Одним словом, это очень крутой сборник, целая глава в «подпольной» истории Европы. Для сильных духом и наполненных яростью слушателей, готовых не только бросить вызов, но и принять его.

In essence, this double-disc by Ostarbeiter (UA) is a resurfacing of a piece done as a cassette back in the late nineties, and released in the shape of one hundred cdr copies two years later. Now, Steinklang Industries took it upon itself to bring the work back, with added material not from the original ÒMetaballistik: Viewed under Infra-RedÓ 1999 tape. There are second parts to a couple of tracks, continuations to a few, remixes, and unknown, unreleased tracks. So it does turn out to be a handsome addition to the Steinklang catalog, especially also being redesigned on the outside by Rafal Kijas with a fresher, machine image as the cover art. It seems to me that the form it is being presented in now is indeed the complete one. It was only about a decade in waiting. Better late than never.
The story feels better-told in this two-disc form, closing the space between a cassette in 1999 and the composition of the last track done that completes this version. Disc one is a dirtier foundation that comes to uphold and justify the more polished entries of disc two. The first set, the raw one, has the purist approach of the more noise-inclined, more centered on loops and samples. Just bordering the line of Power Electronics, actually. Stand-out tracks here are “Kostolomo”, which does what was just mentioned, “Complex Position”, an ambient work that ushers you out toward the end of the initial set, and “Crux Grammata I”, something in a much icier vein of ambient with terror-samples.
The second bout offers the evolution that began with the ideas of the twelve tracks before. Immediately, there is a track reflecting the projects name, and rightfully so, it’s short, one minute of a very sawed-up synth, blunt in its attack and release, through a decent delay. One track in particular that concluded nicely was “Crux Grammata II”. It dropped the thick haze of the first version, and became something bleaker, forceful. The unleashing of a more synth-driven style is something that seems almost methodical, yet these tracks could have just as well have bee written together. I appreciated how it all concludes very much, too, as “Konstanta” is a cloud of steady, somber horns and muffled metallic echos. A rather desolate end, yet that is what makes it a perfect one.
